The Dictionary

Whenever my friends grow real thin
as friends always do around the bend,
and the swings of reason are stopping still
and life has its head stuck up the cement

I look up
the definition of myself
in the dictionary.

You find that strange, perhaps, but let me see
just across the page, beyond the simple fence
the buzzing definition of a bumblebee.

And bright as a wish can be on a sunny pence
right under me the definition of mercedes benz.

I confess i have never really been
to Butan or Belarus or Barnabesheen

But like hedgehogs nightly roll over mice
my eyes love roll in this wordparadise.

It's just that the people whose presence i like
aren't called bertruda, betty, bollocks or bike.
